Dental Crowns

Repairing Damaged Teeth

A dental crown is a permanent covering that fits over a tooth that exhibits substantial decay or fracture – designed to restore the function and strength of a tooth in instances where a filling or onlay is inadequate. Crowns are made of a variety of different materials such as porcelain fused to metal, all porcelain or all gold.

The all porcelain crown has the most natural appearance, traditionally recommended in the front “smile zone” of your mouth. However, with the introduction of the Procera® zirconia ceramic crown, with its superior strength, this restoration can be placed on any tooth in your mouth.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Crown?

Fitting a dental crown requires at least two to three visits to our office. Initially we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown. You always leave our office with your smile intact!

On the next visit we will remove the temporary, and try the permanent crown to verify the accuracy of its fit. An x-ray is often made to assist with this determination. If modifications are required, the crown is returned to the lab for adjustment. Only when the restoration meets our expectations will the crown be cemented into place and you have a new beautiful looking tooth.

When Is A Crown Used?

Many people have unexplained pain from filled back teeth, often due to hairline cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows return of full dental function for these teeth.

In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause appearance problems due to staining or chipping. In this instance your dentist can discuss whether you are a candidate for porcelain veneers or crowns.

Also, when a patient has undergone root canal therapy, a crown is the final restoration to prevent tooth fracture.
